Origins

Some of the research has focused on large prosocial religions. These religions emerged around 10,000 to 12,000 years ago after the invention of agriculture. Research has also looked at the evolution of language and mythology. Recent studies have shown that religion can be surprisingly stable across time.

While research on the origins of religion has been conducted for many years, there are still many unanswered questions. Some theorists suggest that we should study religion in terms of survival and group survival. Others believe that we should look at a deeper evolutionary past.

Religious experience

Whether or not religious experience is a real thing is a matter of debate. Certainly it’s something to be noted, but there’s no evidence it exists.

Rules of behavior

Besides the usual suspects, religious behaviour is also a product of cultural and historical context. Having said that, there’s still no one size fits all when it comes to deciding what constitutes the right and wrong in one’s polka dot suit. Hence, a few rules of thumb should be a part of any religious enlightenment plan. Nevertheless, the most enlightening member of the clan should be well informed and educated on the subject. For instance, the most important component of religious faith is a sanctified heart. In the context of the heart, the most important rules of etiquette would be to keep a cool head and a cool heart.

Morality not synonymous with religion

Throughout history, morality and religion have been intertwined. Religion provides context for moral decisions, and religion promotes self-sacrifice and altruism. Both religion and morality share a set of core moral principles.

There are three ways to approach the question of how morality is derived from religion. The first involves a belief in God as the original transmitter of morality. The second involves a view of religion as an adaptive system. The third involves an emphasis on rationality as the foundation of morality.
